Doktorandkurs vid Institutionen för informatik

Kursöversikten nedan är skriven på engelska.

Course overview

The course focuses on different traditions, concepts, perspectives, and applications within the field of Philosophy of Technology (PoT). You will explore analytical, phenomenological, and critical approaches, and learn about key philosophers and ideas in relation to the essence of technology.

The aim is to help you understand the relationship between technology, science, society, and everyday life – including critical perspectives. You will also reflect on ethical issues and how we use technology and media in today’s world.

The course is given in collaboration between Lund University and University West. It is part of the PhD programme in Informatics, open to PhD students within the Research School Management and IT (MIT), as well as to external PhD students.

Course content and design

The course is built around five main modules, each focusing on a key theme in PoT. The modules are based on the course literature and other relevant material that supports your learning. Each module includes lectures and seminar discussions.

  • Module 1: Introduction to philosophy of technology
  • Module 2: The essence of modern technology
  • Module 3: Post-phenomenology and technology
  • Module 4: Technology and critical theory
  • Module 5: Technology and society

Assessment

You will be examined through an individual essay that focuses on a key theme in the Philosophy of Technology relevant to your doctoral research. You are also expected to take an active part in the seminars—both the module seminars and the final seminar where you present your essay.
